My 9-11 Struggle

Sigh. Sad to admit, my sweet friends, but truth be told we all know that memories of epochal events fade with time.

Which tower fell first? Do you recall?

Was the Pentagon hit before or after both World Trade Center towers?

Think. No don’t. We get confused, and yes, we forget the cold “facts.”
But is this kind of memory the crucial one?

Think of the happenings in your own life that seered your consciousness so intensely that you could never see the world in the same way again. Ever.
That, my friends, is memory.

The fifth year “Anniversary.”

Anniversary celebrations can be sweet or solemn.

Some argue vehemently that Sept. 11 changed everything.
Others insist it changed nothing.

We hear endless arguments about the need to balance freedom and security, but have we balanced either one?..and if so, at what cost to the other?

As most of you know, sweet friends, I spent this anniversary, yet again at Ground Zero.

How did I feel?
How do you feel?

Still stunned.
somewhat numbed?
enraged.
pained.
crushed.
at peace?

I spent the day gazing into glazed over eyes, pained faces and tortured looks.
Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and……….children…….lost.
They have not forgotten.

Pictures of loved ones held six feet in the air , so that no one can not see the beautiful, smiling face that was snuffed out by barbarian savages.

Watching the current and former Mayor of New York City and wondering…what they were feeling.

Wev’e been taught that there is a difference between a real risk and a perceived uncertainty. Risks can be given mathematical odds, while uncertainty ..well the odds are anybody’s guess.

Can anyone truly assess the risks involved in the war against Izlamo-fa-cists?

What does Os-ama bin La-den have planned next?

Can you surmise the mind of a twisted suicide/homicide bomber who is praying to his ahem “god”..and looking forward to his own death after killing you?

Uncertainties are all that remain.

Where do we go from here sweet friends?

Life is a gift.
and I ask you…….
Is it possible to light a candle while still cursing the darkness?
