SaY CheesE

New advertising rules that will officially label cheese as “junk food” were condemned yesterday by the dairy industry as unfair, misleading and counter-productive.

Under regulations coming into force this month, broadcasters will be banned from advertising cheese during children’s television programmes or in shows with a large proportion of child viewers, such as The Simpsons and Hollyoaks.

Labelling cheese as junk food ‘unfair’

Under the nutrient profiling model used to distinguish junk food from “healthy” food, cheese is officially labelled as more unhealthy than sugary cereals, cheeseburgers, double chocolate chip cake and full fat crisps.

Ah. We’re all too familiar with the term “junk food” as describing food that is perceived to be unhealthy or having poor nutritional value.

Hard to keep track with what that means to the food industries.
High levels of fat? too much salt? too much sugar? too many food additives? too much or too little protein… just the right touch of fiber.

Fast foods. hamburgers, pizza, french fries.

Is anyone not guilty of indulging…….

Have you ever tried giving your kids healthy snacks?
Rice cakes ,fresh or dried fruit, carrot sticks or veggies with dip, plain popcorn.

If you did, did they manage to trade with some child for licorice or taffy in school? food-icecreamani-buddy.gif

Parents do tend to make excuses for their childrens’ poor dietary or excercise choices.
Never underestimate the power of imitation. If the foods in the house are healthy, and parents eat well, children may just make healther choices.

Remember, parents are competing against multimillion-dollar advertising campaigns for sugary cereals and snacks..so try to make the celery or banana look appealing! foodbrocciliani.gif

But in the meantime…….sorry……No more cheese for those kids.
Alfalfa sprouts anyone?

What say y’all.. Approve or disapprove of regulating food ads for childrens’ programs?

I never heard of the ”Blogger Halo Award” until this evening when I received a trackpost from Butch over at 123beta. This is an explanation of how it works and I quickly wanted to get involved since the standards are noteworthy and honorable…

I live in a country without TV commercials on the kids’ stations. And my daughters’ favorite snacks are rice cakes, grapes, and bananas.

    I feel so superior.

I think the problem is how much we eat and not what we eat so this particular regulation will probably not change anything. The lack of exercise is a aggravating factor also. The propaganda from advertisers does not help but propaganda is normal in our society. I think parents would do a better job trying to get their children to eat healthy if their were not such pressure from physiologist about how harmful the “eat your vegetables” command was to children. It seems the experts have changed their minds but society has not caught up.

Self righteous meddling tongue clucking finger wagging scolds of one bent or another always seem to be getting the ear of one or another bunch of spineless s*it for brains bureaucrats. The results……more unwarranted intrusions into lives of people who should have their God Given right to be left the hell alone Respected!

Wow! OMMAG said it for me! I feel exactly the same way, so thank you, OMMAG. :)

Hi Angel… Happy New Year hon! Looks like we’ll be putting up with the same crapola in 2007 as we did in 2006. *sigh* I eat cheese and I don’t have a weight problem. The problem in this country is that many parents don’t bother to cook any more. “Homecooking” is becoming lost art, but even that is no one else’s business. If people want to eat junk, then let them eat junk. Whose business is it besides their own? My youngest daughter is gaining weight by leaps and bounds since she went to college. She was raised on home grown vegetables and homecooking, and very few snacks that weren’t healthy so she didn’t have a problem. Now she does because she’s eating junk food. I’ve talked to her about her ridiculous weight gain, but unless she decides to do something about it herself, there’s absolutely nothing I can say or do anymore that will help. It’s frustrating, but it’s her body and her life, not mine.

    Blessings, Angel. Happy New Year!

Doesn’t a lot of cheese come from Wisconsin and isn’t Leftist Madison in Wisconsin?

Doesn’t a lot of cheese come from Vermont the state that loves socialists and communists?

Doesn’t a lot of cheese come from France, the bottom of the socialist anti-American pit?

I say it’s a good idea - let’s stop feeding the kids cheese!

Maybe then these leftist areas will have to eat their cows, cut down on the amount of flatulence and save the planet from global warming disaster.

I guess I’m really behind the curve - I thought cheese was healthy. Go figure. :-)

But, you know there’s a built-in penalty for eating too much cheese, so when something is self-limiting like that, it’s stupid to regulate it. If any punishment is necessary, your intestines provide it.
