Imagine sending your kids off to school, but when they get to the bus they are told they can’t get on because they speak English.

That’s right, English.

It happened to a few children in St. Paul and now the school district is apologizing.
Kids kicked off a bus for speaking English

….Her twin girls, 10, and her son, 8, were kicked off their regular school bus. They were told by the bus driver the route is for non-English speaking students only.

You surprised?
You shouldn’t be.

During recent prime-time broadcasts of the ABC television series, “Desperate Housewives” and the Fox series, “House,” Target ran advertisements in Spanish. Yup. Hola Americanos.

In the likely-vain hope that someday there’ll be a sudden epidemic of simple common sense………let us explore shall we.

Do you recall this?

President Bush yesterday said “The Star-Spangled Banner” should be sung in English, not Spanish, and condemned plans by some immigrant groups to stage a work protest on Monday to sway the debate over the nation’s immigration laws.
President Wants Anthem Sung in English
With passions running high over the release of “Nuestro Himno,” a Spanish-language version of the national anthem, Bush told reporters that people who want to be citizens of the United States should learn English and “ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English.”

Forget about riding school buses.

How do you effectively teach when you can’t even communicate with your own students?

How do you elicit the support of parents when they don’t understand a word your’e saying.

What’s the fuss all about. Well………. If two people don’t speak the same language, er ..that does tend to cramp the communication skills a tad, now doesn’t it.

But fret not sweet friends…the Libs have options for us.

Instead of insisting others learn our language…(yes OUR language in America), why don’t we just hire translators and interpreters in every language on earth and have them at each child or parents’ beck and call.

Then, there’s always nonverbal communication….you know..don’t use the spoken word at all with students or parents.
Draw pictures, or act things out for them eh, kind o like a play. Charades anyone? schoolboy7-thumb.jpg

Or, better yet, why don’t Americans all learn their languages. schoolgirlbooks-thumb.jpg

But, whatever you do……
don’t even think of putting your kids on the wrong bus k?

Hey! First comment again; I must be special.

As an immigrant myself, I’ll say that if you move to a new country, with a new language, and don’t try to learn that language, you’re an assmonkey.

You don’t have to speak it well, you don’t have to lose your accent. You just have to try to communicate in the same language everyone around you is using. And you need to make sure your kids learn that language, too.

My Hebrew is awful, and my accent will always be American, but I try to use it every day. My wife’s is better. Our 4 yr old is fluently bilingual. Our 1 yr old just spoke her first two words: one in English, and one in Hebrew.

The plain truth is, if you don’t learn the language of the country where you live, you will never be able to live effectively.

Today’s the big day for President George W. Bush’s speech on his new way forward in Iraq. Politicians have already taken 50 paces, turned and drawn their weapons, ready to fire away at each other even before they know the…

How long before someone invents a universal translator?
America goes way too far in trying to accommodate immigrants.
If you live here, learn English.

This whole mess comes from the failed Utopian ideal of creating a country that is not a country; i.e. some place that has no history, no culture, no past, and nothing to feel bad about. I say that instead of making kids learn Spanish to ride busses, that we round up all everyone responsible and ship them to the Marianas islands (yes, that’s still technically the U.S., but it’s a remote location where their mind contagion will affect fewer people). Seriously. There must be consequences for actions like this. Even 30 years ago, everyone involved would be disciplined if not fired. Great find, Angel.

This is one of my pet peeves. I drive around and see billboards in Spanish in my town & it makes me angry. Not for me because I’m bilingual, but for my children who will be put at a liability for not speaking spanish in America! It’s outrageous.

Debbie is right to ask… where will we draw the line, indeed.

    Somali Handiwork…

I’m quite sure that when the argument is made in the political talk shows and pundit articles, that the Democrats will once again be seen protesting our military and our fight against the savages of al-Qaida and the other scum of the earth….

My first real gig outa college was teaching music in an all-Latino (seriously, ALL) school in a Texas border town. ALL the children spoke Spanish as their first (and in-home) language, and nearly all of them were children of Green Card Mexican citizens who lived and worked in that area.

Without exception, the parents wanted their children taught in English, because that assured them their best chance of success as they matured and entered the work force.

    Different times. Wiser parents.

    Hey…so that’s the Democratic job-growth plan!

  11. DL says:

Although there were some side issues in this fiasco it does point out that the process of de-Americanizing the country is being done by destroying the common language -it matters not to the left which language replaces English because shortly doublespeak will be the only official government approved language.

This is opart of a broader program by the left – We got here incrementally and need to fight each and every incursion as a major war.

When I worked at the ER, we had to provide translation services for patients at OUR expense; that’s right, we weren’t allowed to rely on family to translate, as it could be unreliable, or even outright false in the case of abuse scenarios, but we were not allowed to charge for it as a provided service, as would an IV, blood draw or EKG would be.

Did you also know that now Doctors must provide bi-Lingual staff, mainly Hispanic of course, for dealing with their patients otherwise they are open to lawsuits for not providing adequate care and language appropriate to the patient so they can be informed if they are not English speaking.

Disgusting. Learn English or go home. Heh, when I lived overseas no one kissed my butt or jumped hoops to speak English, I had to learn the native language to communicate-sure there was some English around to help out, but not like here.

Press one to hear this message in English. huh? It should be press one to hear this message in Spanish. Looks like English is taking a back seat. My son was refused a job just two days ago because he does not speak Spanish. Give me a break!!!!

This is a hot button issue that started years ago when the first (liberal) Department of Motor Vehicles supervisor decided we needed to provide driving test books & exams in Spanish. Now look at where the bilingual monster has brought us.

Funny how the man responsible for the bilingual education push way back then has now come out & repudiated it as not helping people learn English at all, but to cling to Spanish.

We must draw a line before we are living in Big Tijuana.
