On line AgaiN?

Please scroll down, my friends, for all my new posts. Heh.

What do users do on the Internet?

OK…We all know what you do: READ MY BLOG. Right? heh.

But here’s what others are doin.

1-E-mail is by far the most common Internet activity, with 90% of all Internet users claiming to be e-mailers..

2-The most widespread use of the internet today is as an information search utility for products, travel, hobbies, and general information.

3-A little over a third of all Internet users report using the web to engage in entertainment such as computer games

4-Chat rooms are for the young and the anonymous. While a quarter of internet users claim to have used chat rooms, this activity substantially decreases after age 25.

5-Consumer to Business transactional activity– purchasing, stock trading, online auctions, and e-banking.

The more time people spend using the Internet …

… the more they lose contact with their social environment.

… the more they turn their back on the traditional media

… the more time they spend working at home - and at the office.

… the less time they spend shopping in stores and commuting in traffic.

Soooooooo, what do you use the Internet for?

How much time do ya spend on line?

What could or er…should you be doin instead of bein on line?

I should be working or getting “honey dos” done–or at least eating lunch (right now)–instead of being online, but what’s a guy to do? *heh*

Email was once THE killer app for me. Once email lists were my daily online trap. Not so much nowadays.

I basically use the internet as one big library, discussion (and cussin’) board, mental playground.

Oh, and for VOIP. Killer! Counting feddle gummint meddlin’ taxes, $25 a month for all the calls (U.S. and Canada) I want? With voicemail, caller ID, call forwarding and faxing, etc., thrown in? I’m not all that big on talking on the phone, but staying in touch with a widely-spread family is cheaper than dirt, now.

But the “library” functions… that’s too cool for words when I’m sorta stuck in America’s Third World County: books, magazines, newspapers, music, videos, research papers and whole university classes all online, and most “free” (as in “free beer”–as long as I’m willing to pay the “cover charge” of my monthly internet access fee).

LOL! Well it depends on what is going on at the moment. If I’m mad about something I may spend quite a bit of time on this darn thing, or if I’m bored.

I dont care alot about email, but when I’m running around I find myself going to check it inbetween cleaning, cooking, whatever. So I guess email does matter somewhat I just dont like to send it much.

I dont like to chat, but I LOVE to blog :-) And read others blogs (Yes yours) :-)

And I do alot of research on here.

I think you just reminded me that I spend waaaay to much time on this thing, and I’m almost positive I should be doing something else, but oh well it can wait lol

Wow, interesting topic Angel. I think we spend entirely TOO MUCH TIME on the internet. Lately I hate to turn my laptop on. No time to blog, too much time spent going through emails, lots of junk, etc. Then trying to visit my friends, like you, and see what’s important to them each day. We have so many internet friends, as you say, do we have time for family and REAL in-person, real world friends? We are limiting ourselves. It’s a shame.

I would love to go through a day and not even open the laptop, but we feel obligated. It’s not enough we work on computers, we communicate with them, we research with them, we use them for entertainment, for art, for everything.

We should have a yearly “no computer” day!

I’m fed up with the UN…

The United Nations does it again. They have placed Iran as vice chairman of the U.N. Disarmament Commission and elected Syria as its rapporteur, according to Maggie’s Notebook Not only is the U.N. Civil Rights Council discontinuing the examination of…

What do you mean Hun? You ARE my social environment. LOL

  7. Layla says:

Well this depends on how you use the Internet, is it an escape, a way if life not to deal with REAL in-person people? Is it being used to communicate, research, earn a living perhaps? It is all about setting goals and limits.

I love the internet. I love my internet friends. I love my freelance writing and blogging and my radio show, which I am happy to say I am compensated for - it is worth the time in all these arenas.

Do I love all this more than family, do I make time for my family, yes. I have no problem separating myself from my desktop or turning it on either. I love what I do on the internet, enjoy the friends on the internet, but I also love my family, enjoy time with them and time with my friends and getting out and doing things, movies et al.

You can have it all when there is balance, goal setting, and limits that are reasonable for one to live with.

It is all in the balancing act hun!

Great post Angel…i thought you meant on LINE….stores, banks, gas stations, post office etc. i guess we DO indeed all spend to much time on LINE.
    but i do adore Womanhonorthyself..

I do the same thing you do Angel: Blog politically. I also spend too much time on the internet blogging, which is why I recently took two weeks off. Blogger Burnout, ya know? :) I don’t do a lot of e-mail and I’ve never been in a chat room. I’ve been invited to talk on blog radio, but I truly don’t have the time for it, nor the inclination, although when I can I will listen. I still do most of my shopping in stores and all of my banking in a bank.

Probably dating. But that’s expensive, difficult, and carries a high chance of pain. I’d rather blog.

  16. Maggie M. Thornton says:

I ditto everything Marie’s TwoCents said. I use the computer to “take me away.” It’s relaxation to me - blogging, not reading forwards, not playing games (sudoku sometimes), no chat rooms, a little shopping on line, and I love reading blogs - just don’t have enough time.

95% or more of my time spent on the internet is work related. You know, site maintenance, blog maintenance, research, etc.
And yet, I still find time to post comments at Angel’s place. :-)

Thanks again one and all! :)
