Rags to Riches is racing’s queen for a day.
The fabulous filly outdueled Preakness winner Curlin in a breathtaking stretch run and won the Belmont Stakes by a head Saturday, becoming the first of her sex in more than a century to take the final leg of the Triple Crown.
Rags to Riches First Filly to Win Belmont Stakes Since 1905“My hat is off to Rags to Riches,” said Curlin’s trainer, Steve Asmussen, who never gave up hope his chestnut colt would prevail in the dramatic final strides.
Rags to Riches became the third filly to capture the Belmont — Ruthless took the first running in 1867 and Tanya won in 1905. Only 22 fillies have tried the Belmont, with Rags to Riches the first since Silverbulletday finished seventh in 1999.
“It was really giving me goose bumps thinking about the crowd, getting so pumped up about the filly running against the colts”.. ….

Gender differences always excite, don’t they.
Headlines scream:
Rag to Riches became the first of her sex in more than a century to take the final leg of the Triple Crown!
Rags to Riches can beat the boys, too!
Rags to Riches, a filly, wins Belmont!
Ah yes indeed… another battle of the sexes.

Anyone remember these famous female animals?
Arnold the Pig b. 1964 d. 1972
A famous female pig trained by Frank Inn to appear on the zany television show “Green Acres” (1965 to 1971 starring Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor) in the role of “Arnold Ziffel.”
Famous Animals
Arabella the Spider d. 1973
An orb-weaving spider, she was part of early NASA experiments. She spun disorganized webs in space for the Skylab project.
Athena, Owlet b. June 5, 1850 d. 1855
Unusual Pet. She was the devoted companion and pet of famous British nurse Florence Nightingale. This little baby Owl (Athena noctue) was rescued by Florence after a fall from its nest at the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. She was in the possession of some Greek youngsters, who were tormenting the infant hatchling. Her nursing instincts came into being as she fed and trained the owl to enter a cage giving it the moniker…

Fillys, colts…who knew?

Baby cockroaches are nymphes! What insectologist came up with that? Next Stop Lauderdale’s comment is hilarious.

My wife and I just finished re-watching “The Return of the King”. Your post reminds me of Eowyn. She and Merry end up battling the Witch King of Angmar. After he destroys her shield and breaks her shield arm with his mace, he tells her “fool, no man can kill me”. Just then Merry stabs him in the calf and Eowyn removes her helmet and tells him “I am no man” as she stabs him in the face.
Sometimes it just take a woman.

Angel - thanks for the post. We didn’t get to watch the race but apparently the finish was awesome!
Perri - another great line is from “The Rookie” about the science teacher in Texas who got to play professional baseball for several years. As he is considering leaving his job and family to try out, he is concerned about his wife’s ability to handle things. Her response - “Jimmy Morris, I am a Texas woman. I don’t need a man to handle things for me!” WHOOP!

An old girlfriend and I used to go to the races, I handicapped and she picked the horses and we always had fun all night and left with money in the pocket. Hardcore folks started following us around as we made our picks, LOL. I remember a couple fillies growing up that always outran us eager young colts, grin.

Way to go filly!
I will be going to the horse races this summer at a Race track near here.

I missed all three triple crown races this year:( Wow, your post makes me realize we missed a great race!
Girl power all the way
Growing up in the midwest, I passed your animal gender name test with flying colors. I wonder how city slickers did?

At last, news for all the neigh-sayers!

Martin, that was at once the most sophisticated, and the lowest form of humor I’ve read all day…
Very punny!

Interesting. I’m not a horse race fan, so I never think about whether the winner is a he or she.
Isn’t it strange the different names given to different sexes in different animals? I wonder who thinks these names up?

I’ve been horse back riding many times. Even on the beach in SD ( Imperial Beach) that was fun!
Take care babe!

Aren’t horses just beautiful creatures?

Athena the owl stumped me. I had no idea Florence Nightingale even had time to care for a pet.
As far as gender differences go, I’ll paraphrase Oprah’s line…
You go, females!!!

I gave up my pet cockroaches when I left NY almost 20 years ago.
Time flies (no I dont keep them as pets either…)

I luv my female canines.

Oopsss… Sorry ’bout that trackback….
June 11th, 2007 at 7:16 pm
LOL! “I am woman, hear me roar… or would that be “neigh”?” Hee hee. You crack me up!
I didn’t know Arnold the pig was a female. That’s cheating! She should have been allowed to play herself. Aren’t pigs discriminated against enough already? Sheesh! They could have called her Annabell.

EEEEHHHHAAAWWW! I love donkeys, jacks or jennets - they are so cool. I’m planning to get myself a couple of donks, when I go to Colorado this fall. How about that filly? The Belmont Stakes is one brutal course. The horses look like they are running in 6 inches of sand. Gotta be tough on endurance. Good for her!
BTW, Lassie was a MALE - just for the record.
June 11th, 2007 at 8:28 pm
Angel,
I’m so sorry…I definitely ’screwed-up’ that trackback! I beg for mercy!
June 12th, 2007 at 8:25 am

June 13th, 2007 at 9:19 am
when given the opportunity, i try to never outrun the men!
June 13th, 2007 at 9:50 am
Much as I wished for a Triple Crown this season, I have to say the last two races - the Preakness and the Belmont - were among the most exciting I have ever watched! Wonderful stuff!
As the horses came around the turn, four abreast, I cheered Rags To Riches on! What a race! What a finish! Wow!

I think you should consider Babe Ruth, Joe Lewis, Joe Dimaggio, Ronald Reagan……All were men.
