FatherS DaY OpenTrackback Weekend

Fatherhood is the one job that you can get without the slightest degree of experience, knowledge or talent (despite what you may hear to the contrary on Father’s Day). For that reason, when a friend had his first child recently, I quickly rattled off the most important things that I have learned as the father of three boys and a girl:

Don’t wear white shirts while changing boys (they consider it a type of canvas); the easiest way to extract material from noses is a hot bath (except for cheese sticks); always check your briefcase for toy guns before entering a courthouse; and always check the children for captive animals before leaving a forest.

A lawyer’s guide to fatherhood

The Constitution prohibits the taking of property without compensation by the government. Within their first two years, all children embrace this principle with a vengeance. Parents learn they must compensate for any item removed: a toy for the car keys; a cracker for the 12-inch butcher knife…

Free speech. By 10, children have developed an almost unlimited expectation of free speech. Indeed, since they have now concluded that your views are worthless and out of date….

Ah. Fatherhood.

My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and say, “You’re tearing up the grass.” “We’re not raising grass,” Dad would reply. “We’re raising boys.”
Harmon Killebrew

A father carries pictures where his money used to be.

By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong.

The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.

  4. Terry_Jim says:

I recall going to a ballgame in Omaha at Rosenblatt Stadium – where the College World Series begins tomorrow- with my Dad and his Dad.
Must have been in about 1968, we were about 6, 26 and 76 years old, sitting in the red seats in the upper section on the 3rd base side.

Grandpa said, “Boy , it sure is foggy tonight.”
Dad said,”Yeah, it sure is foggy, Daddy.”
(He always said “Daddy”, instead of “Dad”. I did ,too, until a neighbor kid mocked me about it. Said it sounded ‘babyish.’ ).

It was a warm, hazy summer night, and the nighthawks were swooping around, picking off moths in the translucent shafts of light that surrounded the field.

Hmmm, Grandpa said it was foggy, Dad said it was foggy,
    they must know …

I let my imagination run a bit, and saw the fog roll in from the nearby Missouri River. The Summer haze seemed to my little eyes a roiling, thickening mist as the shafts of light started to solidify.

    That’s how I remember it.

About 10 years ago Dad and I were there at a ball game with my son,
sitting above the 3rd base line in similar Summer weather as that time with Grandpa, and I reminded Dad about that, about Grandpa and the foggy night at Rosenblatt.

Dad said, “Yeah, he really had a problem with those cataracts!”

  5. Terry_Jim says:

    Dad didn’t tease Grandpa then,
didn’t point out his error in perception,
    his faltering eyesight,
    the ravages of age.

He just said, “Yeah, Daddy, it sure is.”

    Happy Father’s Day.

Here is my story from yesterday. We took my two kids (10 & not quite 3) to the local park that has a water play area. This area has two palm trees that squirt water up so it splashes down on the leaves, some rings that soak you as you run through and three fountains that spray straight up and that the kids like to sit on for some odd reason.

After getting settled under a tree my wife takes my son (the youngest) to the play area while my daughter and I do a bit of reading. I look up and see my son going nuts, NUTS I tell you. When the trees would spray he would do laps as fast as he could run around the tree getting totally soaked, and then run over to the blanket and towells with chattering teeth, blue lips and a big grin. He would just get settled and warmed up a bit when the second tree would start spraying and he would point and shout “uh oh! the tree is going!” and proptly sprint to said tree and begin doing laps again. This took place about 10 times while we were there. Talk about funny!
