ChoiceS OpenTrackback Weekend

…it is now possible to buy no fewer than 38 types of milk. Some of it is flavoured with strawberry, banana or Belgian chocolate; some has active bacterial flora; some has extra omega-3; and some, quite possibly, is a bit like the white, plain, unmuckedabout-with, milk-flavoured stuff we all used to drink happily in the days before we turned into paranoid health freaks.
The tyranny of choice: Do we really need 38 types of milk? And that’s before you get to the aisle with 154 flavours of jam, or the one with 107 varieties of pasta.
..Consider, too, the spectacular variety of TV programmes we can flick through now that most of us have cable.
..remember when telephones were a state monopoly and it used to take three months to get a new one installed? - but it is also a wholly natural one. As scientific studies have shown, humankind cannot bear too much variety.
..First, it puts an enormous burden on people to gather information so that they can make a good decision,’ he says. ‘Who has the time to find the best digital camera, the best phone plan, the best retirement plan and the best school for their kids? Nobody.’
In a busy, accelerating world, we haven’t time for all this pointless decision-making. Give us three types of brilliant olive oil, not 300 mediocre ones.

Dang. All the choices give me a headache.
And I thought it was just me. ![]()
Do ya want the orange juice organic or regular, with or without calcium, pulp, no pulp, a little pulp. Help!
![]()
Do ya want the herbal variety toothpaste with the added fluoride, or perhaps the cavity-busting fancy shamcy alternative with baking soda or howzabout those flavor crystals eh.

Don’t even get me started on jeans.
Ya gotcher slim fit, relaxed fit, baggy or even extra baggy.
The there’s stone-washed, acid-washed or the latest and greatest: distressed.
Someone tell me how jeans can be um..‘distressed.’
And of course would ya prefer the button-fly or zipper-fly… faded or regular?
Truth is that having too many choices also can lead people to make quick, simple, snap judgments just to avoid the hassle of wading through all those confusing options.
Let’s be honest.
Too many selections can produce paralysis, not freedom.

Sweet friends.
Sometimes, less really is more.

What say y’all?

You said it, Angel! There are just too many options for us. Just trying to find the right kind of OJ for my wife stresses me out (no pulp, vitamin D & calcium, fresh squeezed, etc.)

Hope you had a great forth.

On the one hand it’s great to be able to get what you need.. and yet, as you say too many choices can be mind-numbing. Less is best, in most everything in life.

Yes and when it comes to too many options let’s remember the July 4th holiday - or is that the July 4th month? Out here in the country I’ve had the pleasure of listening to fireworks daily/nightly since Memorial Day! Seems like everyone has chosen a different day to celebrate.

I gotta say,
I would much rather have too much choice
than too little,
or a mandated number of toothpaste or tourque wrench choices.
The ‘invisible hand’ of the free market is the most efficient way to distribute resources across needs. The chaotic appearance of freedom is a beautiful thing, boil it down to the buyer and seller conducting a mutually beneficial trade each time an item is purchased.
It can be daunting to find thebest choice,
As Devo sang;
There are many good choices on the menu, at the market, pick one.
It doesn’t have to be the best, good is good enough in most of the products you mentioned.
