OK..I’ve done my share of food posts..but this one..ahem ..takes the cake..heh.

Public health departments in the Mississippi Delta report a decline in patients eating dirt.
Officials say practice of eating dirt dying out
Geophagia is a form of pica, a nutritional eating disorder characterized by the persistent eating of non-food items.
..it was once widespread around the world, dating back to philosopher Aristotle who observed Greek women eating clay.
Ah. Not to make light of real disorder…but who would have thought?
We all eat dirt. The difference is - most of us do it UNintentionally.
The Food and Drug Administration has reported that it is virtually impossible to remove all the dirt and foreign objects (insects, worms, rodent hairs, and yes even…maggots off our fruits and veggies.

Pica is also a behavior that may also surface in children who’ve had a brain injury affecting their development. It can also be a problem for some pregnant women, as well as people with epilepsy.
People with pica frequently crave and consume nonfood items such as:
Pica
dirt ,clay, paint chips, plaster, chalk, cornstarch, laundry starch, baking soda
coffee grounds, cigarette ashes, burnt match heads, cigarette butts,
feces, ice, glue, hair, buttons, paper, sand, toothpaste, and soap.
It is quite serious and can require medical attention.

Aside from the unintentional dirt wer’e all consuming sweet friends………what are your intentionally eaten favorite foods?

Butter vs. Margarine ? I trust cows over scientists.

Practice safe eating, always use condiments.

Did you ever notice they never take any fat hostages? You never see a guy coming out of Lebanon going: I was held hostage for seven months and I lost 175 pounds, I feel good and I look good and I learned self-discipline. That’s the important thing.”

It says to separate two eggs, but it doesn’t say how far to separate them.”

When I had my first child I remember the Dr telling me to let him know if I had any crazy craving like paint chips and plaster etc.., I had no idea there was a name for that.
Ha, and I thought he was a bit off his rocker, turns out he was right all along lol.

Funny stuff……when I was 7-8, I remember actually eating dirt, always like the smell……thank goodness that’s one of the many things I outgrew.

Ewwwwww… though ice seems pretty harmless.
Had read something about this once.. somewhere… scary all the various
dis-orders out there..

I saw a special on this disorder several years ago. I remember one of the women who did this every day saying that she didn’t feel she had been nourished until she ate so much dirt. I don’t remember the amount, but it really sounded strange then and it still does.
As for the maggots, dirt and bugs on our fresh veggies and fruit, I would much rather eat them by accident than eat the chemicals some growers use on their produce, which is why we grow ours organically, but I have to admit to cleaning them as much as possible.
Good post and fun too! As for what’s for dinner, home grown corn on the cob and tomatoes, Texas T-bone and baked potatoes. Yum!

I had no idea. It sounds so strange.

Great, now I’m hungry again!

I’ve known about this odd disorder, as I made inquiries, after watching a guy eat cigarette butts.
As a gastronome, I always use good cooking and cleaning habits in the kitchen, and prefer my cooking to other’s. I know how often I wash my hands.
Like Ogre said, now I’m hungry again, too.
I wonder if the BBQ place is still open. I could sure go for a pulled pork sammitch.
July 9th, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Man, that is one amazing sammich, NO2L !!! …but I’m not hungry anymore after reading about the pica.

Neither. The glass is too small.

Beef, it’s what’s for dinner! — and sweet iced tea, and potatoes, and ice cream for dessert — always. I’m a real health food nut. I go nuts if someone insists that I eat that stuff!
July 10th, 2007 at 10:42 am
That hamburger picture did me in……Though all that talk about dirt and maggots helped me stay on my diet !! Good post

Pica….with or without frosting?
Hey Angel…if one mans ceiling is another mans floor….then who knows what goes with edibles…maybe one mans pica is another mans pasta????
