Our Country’s most PopulaR DesserT

Ice-cream lovers are taking a licking.
As the summer mercury rises, so, too, has the price of ice cream across the country, where a scoop of rocky road can cost 50 cents more than it did just a month ago.
“It was a little much, but worth it…. enjoying a $6 dollar bowl of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and vanilla mix at Coldstone Creamery in Times Square.
Six dollar bowl of ice cream.
Would y’all go for that?

Guess which flavor accounts for over half of the ice cream eaten.
My fave. Plain ole Vanilla.
It’s used in milkshakes, sundaes, banana splits, not to mention on top of pies, and other desserts.

Ice Cream, gelato, sorbet, frozen yogurt, Ice Cream Cakes, Shakes, and Smoothies…mmmmmmm.

What’s your pleasure?
If you prefer softies, you have British chemists to thank, as they discovered a method of doubling the amount of air in ice cream creating soft ice cream.
Eskimo lover? You can thank Chris Nelson, who was a ice cream shop owner from Iowa. He saw a young customer trying to choose between ordering an ice cream sandwich and a chocolate bar, so he created the solution: a chocolate covered ice cream bar!

Anyone remember the fleet of white trucks equipped with bells and drivers in uniform. Ah yes……The Good Humor truck!

Angel, you’re killing me. I love ice cream, and all your pictures look so good. My favorite store bought ice cream, Bryers Vanilla Bean. My truly favorite is homemade strawberry, chocolate chip mint, and banana.

Coldstone Creamery’s prices may seem high, but you get a massive amount of ice cream. It’s still higher than if you went to the grocery store to get the stuff and made your own bowl, but most grocery store ice cream isn’t as good.
My favorite ice cream dessert is plain vanilla with hot fudge and nuts. I don’t get it often because I’m diabetic and there’s no such thing as truly “sugar free” ice cream, although there’s sugar free hot fudge from some of the major brands.
My least favorite PLACE to get ice cream (other than those where there’s no “no sugar added” ice cream available) is Baskin and Robbins, because while there’s just about always 31 flavors available, there’s always only one “no sugar added” flavor and it’s almost always “thin mint”. When it’s not, it’s usually some bizarre combination of banana and coconut or other flavors I don’t like. Those flavors just sit there for a long time with noone buying and that ice cream gets stale too.

OK, Angel, now I’m hungry!
My oldest daughter works at Coldstone. Man, I love that family discount! They ring it up then press “the magic button” and it cuts the price in half.
I usually get the smallest size, though. It is so filling.

Okay - for all of you who are not Texans or do not live within an area served by this company - Blue Bell Ice Cream is the absolute best store bought ice cream you can find. It beats any of them and it is made in Brenham, Texas at a creamery. It is so famous that is has been shipped to White House on more than one occasion. The company is celebrating their 100th birthday this year. If you get the American Profile in your Sunday newspaper, this company was featured in it this past weekend! I guarantee you that it tastes like homemade - in fact their most popular flavor is “Homemade Vanilla”! It is the best. They have pecan pie where they actually use whole pecan pies broken into pieces - UMMM. They only use fresh fruits and only make the ice cream with those fruits when they are in season - thus for peaches - it is a limited time for “Peaches and Cream”. Probably 2nd on the list is “Cookies and Cream”, which is made with Oreos (yes - some pieces you can read the letters!). Pecan Pralines and Cream is another favorite at my house!

Angel, I had my first Ben and Jerry’s this past week. I’m not an true ice cream lover, but this was a chocolate cone (maybe a double or triple or something - but no chunks) - and it was was wonderful.
I indulge a couple of times a year - usually a Hagen Daz Pecan Praline. I’m a cookie monster, though.

I love ice cream, too.
Six dollar bowl of ice cream.
Would y’all go for that?
I believe it.
At the grocery store across the street, I found Ben & Jerrys for 23 to 30 shekels per pint! That’s about 5 to 7 dollars, depending on the flavor…
July 19th, 2007 at 6:50 am
Well ….. I’m not a sweets person. I understand if you shun me from now on
I wouldnt know if $6 is high or not for ice cream but I can tell you people in Dallas pay that for the smallest amount of gelato!

The Good Humor truck looks very tempting, but give me a Hot Brownie with Ice-cream and a touch of whipped cream on it and I’m very, very happy
July 19th, 2007 at 7:51 am
And I wonder how many extra pounds will be blamed on your tempting post?
(Of course, in our day and age, we must blame someone else for failing to resist the temptation….)
July 19th, 2007 at 8:37 am
Yankee, that’s why we go to gym daily, to work off the Ice Cream from the night before.
July 19th, 2007 at 9:02 am
Strawberry says Blue Bell ice cream is the very best, and as a Texan I can tell you that’s exactly right!
No, Angel girl, I would not pay six dollars for a bowl of ice-cream, but I’m not that much of an ice-cream lover. When I do get a craving for it though, by favorite flavor is strawberry.
July 19th, 2007 at 10:02 am
This article has just cost me some money because now I gotta drive into town and buy me some of that sugar free strawberry ice cream. I love the stuff and nothin’ better on a hot day after one finishes off the watermelon
July 19th, 2007 at 11:38 am
I like vanilla the best, but it doesn’t take an arm-twisting to get me to try other flavors
