OuR DaughterS in the Military and BeautY Pageants?

While serving as a combat medic in Afghanistan, Sgt. Jill Stevens could always count on her Army buddies to shield her from the less sensitive aspects of a mostly male military. The soldiers, she says, developed a warning system. Off-putting jokes, racy movies and stories filled with foul language were introduced as “NFS”: Not for Stevens.

Until a few months ago the Miss America Pageant would have carried the same disclaimer. Now here she is, Miss Utah, a self-described klutz in heels, competing for a crown that symbolizes femininity and well on her way to becoming the crowd favorite.

Ten Hut!
The military’s Miss America candidate

Stevens hopes her involvement will help change the perception of the Miss America Pageant as a beauty-first, brains-second competition—a view she herself held until two years ago.

“I used to think these women were shallow and selfish and obsessed with their looks. It’s actually the opposite. Their résumés are filled with a life of service,” she says. “After meeting them, my whole perspective changed.” Still, she adds, “the image of Miss America is too perfect, almost untouchable. I’m hoping to change that.

Ah. Women.
You want respect.
You also want to strut around in a bathing suit in front of ogling men and be “a sex object.”

Why is it that even talented, accomplished women feel to need to reduce themselves to mere “body parts” to be judged, rated and gawked at by the masses.

Sorry,……..Can’t have it both ways.

Despite the contagious disease of political correctness, gender differences do have consequences on the battlefield.
Men can die.

Although many tests throughout the military have become gender–normed to accommodate women…………when push comes to shove..literally…we need a man for the job.

We can thank the ole Clinton administration, for the deaths of many of our daughters in Iraq, as they threw out the “risk rule,” which essentially prohibited the placement of women in roles near (though not directly involved in) – combat.

The solidarity of a military unit depends upon taking joint, often life threatening risks. The inherent protective function of any society has always been, without a doubt a masculine one.

In other arenas where men and women compete, such as business, men may have no sense of obligation to “protect” women.
Not true in the Military.

No matter what fabrications the PC machine spews about “gender neutrality”, MOST..( I said “most”) women are not as strong physically as men are. A soldier in the field simply can’t depend on a woman’s physical strength, not to mention the psychological differences in aggression or fear quotient.

Men should have protective impulse with regard to women.

It is what keeps women from being ganged raped, pushed, shoved and beaten by other men.

Yes. Women can participate in specialized civilian support units behind the front lines.
And yes, the military should pay competitive wages to the members of such technical support units.

But, bear this in mind. The world’s greatest weapons and most volatile secrets are entrusted to the military.
Those weapons and secrets should never fall under the influence of no doubt, the world’s most powerful force of all:……human sexuality.

Sexuality and national defense needs don’t work well together.

Sexual temptations within the military ranks itself namely men and women living in close quarters and working together, can ultimately undermine the strength of the nation to defend itself. It is morally untenable.

The Army, Navy, and Air Force were not designed to be a dating or mating service.

As more women fill the ranks, the military offers more oppurtunities for sexual activity and abuse. The obvious outcome? Discipline and order break down.
In plain English, men are “distracted” by having women close by. Sometimes, very distracted.
It defies common sense and is morally indefensible.

Extreme you say?
While a sexual atmosphere in the workplace has been argued to add spice, charm and romance, the statistics of couples having affairs in the workplace have skyrocketed.

The D.O.D. has better things to do than concerning itself with immorality and adultery proliferating?
Not so.
Scandal and immorality eventually tarnish the pride and honor of the entire Armed Forces.

The military sector can not afford such a “distraction” from exercising one’s duties. It is life and death.

Not to mention, it invites sex-ual predators who routinely R-ape, abuse and extract sex-ual favors from emotionally weaker and lower-ranking staff.

Claims of sexual assault in the military rose 24 percent in 2006, according to a Pentagon report released Wednesday. An older study found that nearly half of all assaults in the Army take place in barracks.

How the army separates its men and women.

Let us be honest friends.
Thousands of young and impressionable recruits, who just so happen to be in their sexual prime join the military each year.
Do we deny that their attentions will naturally drift towards sexual oppurtunities or even sexual games.

Unbridled sex-ual activity furthers a hedonistic and decadent climate. Not exactly compatible with “honor, loyalty, respect, honesty, and discipline”, now is it?

Military men or women are direct representatives of America.
And yes, their actions, moral or immoral, reflect directly upon our Nation.

No disrespect to Sgt. Jill Stevens ,who said she “could always count on her Army buddies”.

If she struts her stuff in a bathing suit or form fitting, provocative gown at a “beauty pageant”………(Note : no fat, “ugly” girls at the pageant), she will no doubt, be able to “count on her buddies” again.
To objectify her.
To Check out her “body parts”.

and ultimately…….”reduce” her to being a “thing on display” for the enjoyment of men world over.

Sorry, but “beauty” pageants are not only shallow and demeaning to all the women in them, and women period; they are the ultimate form of objectification.

Does she want to be the next “pin up girl” hung up in some barracks for men to leer at when they’re lonely?
If the ahem…”pageant” wasn’t sexualizing and objectifying women………..why are the girls made to swagger around with next to nothing on and in high heels.
Why are there no girls with bad skin, scars, or a few pounds on their bones?..Oh right.

They are not worthy of being leered at and “rated”.
After all………they are not “beautiful”, and thus not marketable.

Being a female soldier should remain respectable.

So sorry Ms. Stevens. You hope this “will help change the perception of the Miss America Pageant as a beauty-first, brains-second competition”?
Not quite.
Not quite.

On second thought, Ms. Stevens, for your own dignity……Don’t do it.
For the respect of all female soldiers, past and present: Just Don’t do it.

What say Y’all sweet friends?

Being a man, i have no objections to beauty pageants, not that i make it a point to watch them or something. But you are right about women in the armed forces, the strongest man is stronger than the strongest woman. I don’t understand why women want to do the things men do, men don’t try the things women do, well at least not the ones i know.

  32. Defiant_Infidel says:

While I’ve never been much for beauty pageants, Hot Rod, I don’t have the problem with women in the military that you espouse. Yes, job descriptions and duties should be varied from men, often due to physical strength abilities or inabilities. But there are contributions that can be made for folks of each gender… leadership simply must place responsibility with appropriate skill… gender aside. And I just have a difficult time accepting that gender segregation is the protect all/cure all for any shortage of responsibility, discipline and conduct on the part of men… or women!

Our youth lacks these qualities? Often, the answer is a resounding “YES”. But the solution is not to stop requiring them. The solution is to insist upon it and back it up with harsh punishment to enforce the standards when breaches occur.

So I only half agree with you this time. How truly unusual that is, though!

    Have a premium weekend, Angel… :)

I agree about women in the military. we can be in support roles, but a man needs to do the fighting. Isn’t it obvious? Anyone who has raised teenagers of the male gender have got to realize that young men do not need the distraction of a female “buddie”.

  37. Aurora says:

Angel, after living in small town, USA and seeing the beauty pageant culture up close, I wholeheartedly agree with you here. The masses of young women competing based on looks while their ‘less pretty’ friends sat in the balconies watching. The heartbreak and feeling of inadequacy amongst all the beautiful young women who didn’t win. The pressure from daddies who want their daughter to be the queen of all her friends and the feeling of letting those daddies down by the ‘losers’. I see nothing wrong with a young woman doing her best to be attractive. It’s natural. But this kind of rivalry is not. And I agree that the goals of being a ‘beauty queen’ are completely incompatible with those of fighting on the front.
There are some other great points you’ve made here that rang true such as the male ‘protective’ urge towards women and gang rape etc. Another original and excellent post.

  40. Carl says:

My objection to beauty pageants on the local level is the discimination it provides. No, not pretty people vs not-so-pretty people (although that’s objectionable as well being one of the not-so-pretty people – I have a face that stops digital clocks). But the gender financial discimination it brings. Let me explain.

When I was growing up in a rural county in Mississippi there were no less than 18 beauty pageants each with several guarantee prizes mostly in the form of varying levels of financial scholarships. Now this was only open to females. Males had and still have no equal opportunity for this. Some would argue that males get athletic scholarships. That is true to an extent but is not a valid argument because the beauty pageant scholarships are GUARANTEED and are ALWAYS awarded to various contestants while athletic scholarships are sporadic. Furthermore, since the pageants only allowed the “pretty people” to enter, the average Joe…’scuse me…Joan would be involved. So the same small group of individuals won scholarships year after year. Admitedly these weren’t full tuition and board type scholarship but back then the typical amounts ranged from $500 – $5000. Considering that the same individuals entered these flesh contests each year starting back when they were crumb crunchers, the money can add up quickly. However males were completely left out and depending upon the rules, many females were also left out.

This is the main reason why I object to beauty pageants. There are other reasons but this one I find the unfairest of all.

The line: “When I was growing up in a rural county in Mississippi there were no less than 18 beauty pageants each with several guarantee prizes mostly in the form of varying levels of financial scholarships.”

Should have read: “When I was growing up in a rural county in Mississippi there were no less than 18 beauty pageants each yearwith several guarantee prizes mostly in the form of varying levels of financial scholarships.”

And the line: “Furthermore, since the pageants only allowed the “pretty people” to enter, the average Joe…’scuse me…Joan would be involved.”

Should have read: “Furthermore, since the pageants only allowed the “pretty people” to enter, the average Joe…’scuse me…Joan would not be involved.”

Sorry. I got home from a long 8-hour day of data entry which means I sit in front of a computer typing.

Women are responsible for objectifying themselves and it makes it hard on those of us who choose not to operate in day to day life acting like sluts.

great post angel and the comments are of the highest quality anywhere. brooke, you’re a gem. your statement of “A woman should never be put on a battlefield, but if the battlefield finds her, she should be capable of handling the situation.” is spot on. this is exactly how it should be.

women are fully capable of standing up for ourselves and protecting what is ours, ut not for a long term. i call it the momma bear syndrome. the female bear only attacks to protect itself or to protect its cubs. the male bear is the real aggressor. i like it that way. i want my husband to protect and take care of me. but if he’s not there, i sure know how to stand up for myself.

I am fiercely opposed to women serving in front line roles (and that includes being deployed on Navy ships). It’s not because i am sexist or bigoted. It’s because t creates a huge conflict of interest and poses a variety of really difficult problems. As a supervisor in the Navy, one of the biggest problems I had to deal with was the relationships between men and women serving under me. Especially on a carrier, only about 1/10 of our population was women, which meant that when guys did manage to hook up with a woman, it created a whole lot of contempt and jealousy amongst the ranks. Combine that with sex, prostitution (we broke up several rings during a single deployment, pregnancies, fraternization, and just the simple fact that many times women were unable to do certain tasks and we had to pick up the slack… And it doesn’t paint a very pretty picture. Yes, sure, there are plenty of women who do a great job, but there were more that caused problems than didn’t.

The military is just one organization that shouldn’t be subjected to “equality,” “fairness” or feel-good politics! It just doesn’t work.

In general women are not as strong as men, but that does not mean they cannot be better soldiers. Audie Murphy was barely 5 foot 5 inches tall and a skinny runt no stronger than a typical female yet in just over two years of combat he became the most decorated United States combat soldier of World War II, and even in the entire United States military history. He received the Medal of Honor, the U.S. military’s highest award for valor, along with 32 additional U.S. medals, I believe he got every possible medal there was to get. He even got five medals from France, and one from Belgium. He enlisted in the army after being turned down by the Marines and paratroopers for being too short and too skinny.

I believe a woman can be as good a soldier as any man. We only need have faith in them.

Not every man or a woman is a hero, yet we have parades to honor bravery in our fellow men and women. That everyone is not courageous and deserving of a parade should not deter us from idolizing or celebrating those who are.

So too for beauty pageants, not everyone is Miss America, but that does not mean that beauty contests should not be held. It is in our nature to enjoy contests whether it be for log-rolling or brick-hurling or for strongest man or most beautiful woman. Not everyone is a genius yet we see no problem with the Nobel Prize.

There was a time in our history when the world did not have beauty contests and during that time women were not held in any high regard at all. It is precisely in those cultures that glorify women that women are most free to pursue their destinies. Beauty Contests are banned in Islam precisely because they hate women.

I believe it will take a few generations before men will know how to act properly around women whether in the workplace or the military. When I was a child, it was inconceivable that a woman would even run for President.

I expect my granddaughter to one day be serving as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff or President of the US or CEO of a Fortune 500 Company or Miss America because I believe she can be whatever she wants to be.

Thanks for acknowledging a basic and fundamental truth – “No matter what fabrications the PC machine spews about “gender neutrality”, MOST..( I said “most”) women are not as strong physically as men are. A soldier in the field simply can’t depend on a woman’s physical strength, not to mention the psychological differences in aggression or fear quotient.” (Angel). I’ve spent nearly a quarter century in NYC’s Fire Dept and that truth is self-evident.

While I strongly believe that all job openings and most kinds of duties (save direct combat) be open to all, the standards for ANY of those positions, especially high-risk positions should never be watered down to allow in more of one group or gender.

It must be up to the applicant to rise up to that standards and not have the standards reduced for themselves.
