Falafel for Eskimos …yumma!

That is no match for the challenge he took upon himself: selling falafel to the residents of Fairbanks, Alaska without ever cooking it before and in a place where most have never heard of the national Israeli food.
Think it’s impossible to sell ice to Eskimos? Try selling falafel in Alaska?
Although the resemblance to the original is evident, there is one big difference: Nadav’s $7 pita is stuffed with falafel, tehina, parsley and… lettuce. “Although I tell my customers that in Israel we prefer our falafel spicy and with pickles, the Alaskans’ craving for lettuce couldn’t be squashed.

Falafel. Mmmmmmmmmmmm.

What is it y’all say?

Falafel is made from chickpeas. Mixed usually with onion, parsley, cilantro, garlic, baking powder, salt, cumin and crushed red pepper.
You mix, and scoop rounded tablespoons of the falafel mixture into a hot oil and fry in small batches until browned and crisp, just about 2 minutes.
Dip in tahini and your’e done!
Don’t tell me you don’t know what tahini is. ![]()

Dang. See my post bout hummus here. Heh. ![]()
Street vendors and Israeli pizza shops in NYC tuck falafel into pita bread with chopped lettuce and tomato and plenty of tahini sauce.

Of course Israeli salad on the side is a must!
Nothin to it! ![]()

Grab a few large tomatoes, a few medium cucumbers, about 5 large lettuce leafs, 1sweet red pepper ,4-5 small radishes (if you like them…I don’t
..ikkk)
Add 1/2 small onion.
Finely chop and cut all veggies into very very small pieces.
Don’t be lazy like me..heh..The size makes all the difference. Heh.
Dressing:
1/2 squeezed lemon
3-5 spoonfuls of olive oil…Add salt and pepper to taste~!

In Israel they have what we might call falafel buffets. You get a pita with a few falafel balls in it, and you get to load it up with all sorts of salads and cooked vegetables, hummus, pickles, dressing…….to your heart’s content.

Warning: Tehina sauce tends to um…dribble down your chin…….
wear a bib?

But….Whatever ya do..don’t order falafel in pita on a first date. Heh. ![]()

Angel, that sounds so good. Email me some, ha. No meat in any of those recipes. I guess the chckpeas ad the protein? The salad looks good too, all fresh and nothing but lemon and olive oil, my favorites.
I’m making sea scallops for dinner tonight. Hubby loves them. Maybe a big salad, some homemade Lemon cheesecake, homemade light as a feather breadsticks rolled in parmesan cheese. Yum Yum.

We used to eat falafel in college in Boston (but it was made by a Lebanese guy). It always seemed to be missing something. Only later did I realize what it was. Ground up cow. There is no cow in falafel! Doesn’t that make it not count as food?

Oooh, and here I am in Chicago, and I haven’t yet found a place for great falafel. Bummer.
The pictures in your post, Mz Lucky-To-Be-Living-In N.Y., are making me starve!
The last really good falafel I had was at a place called “3 Brothers From Italy” (”3 Brothers From Cairo” would have been more accurate) on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, about 9 years ago.
Now you’ve done it, LOL, you’ve launched me on a hunt for good falafel in Chicago. Yum!

Well, I must say I feel left out. I’ve never even heard of this stuff. Falafel looks like meatballs to me, which I made last night. Does that count? Probably not… LOL! Oh well, I’m from Texas so what can you expect. We eat a lot of breakfast burritos, Jumbalaya, T-bone Steak, roasts with carrots, potatoes, onions, peppers, salmon and a lot of salads. Just old fashioned American, Tex Mex and Cajun food. Oh… and quite a bit of Rice. I think I would be a foreigner in NYC.
We do the Seder dinner at my church every year though. That’s about all the Jewish food that I ever eat.

Just kidding, but I would love to hear about the influence upon European food by Jewish cooking. Who copied who on Borscht, perogi, potato pancakes etc? It would make for a very educational column - er favorite recipes must be included.

What a great post, Angel! Kudoz (and b’hatzlacha) to the Alaskan falafel vendor.
I love the pic of the falafel stand called Falafel Oved. That’s “Falafel Stand,” for the non-Hebrew speakers out there.
And you’re right about the Israeli salad, although I like it in the pita with the falafel. Definitely good stuff, and the highest evolution of street food.
But what’s the pic of McD’s doing in here?
January 6th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Sorry, but falafel just taste… yuck! Maybe I have not got the “right stuff”, but i’ll take a pita kebab any time over it (or Palt). Then again; a freshly smoked Arctic Char served with Almond Potatoes from the Torneo valley, a couple of slices of cucumber, a coctail tomato or two and chorinzones. BANG- you’re in heaven! And then for dessert, vanilla ice cream with warm Cloudberry jam. Nnnnnnngghhhh! [DROOLING!]
