Sloooooooooow computer..eeeeeek!

Collective term for those who use computers. Users are divided into three types: novice, intermediate and expert.

Novice Users: people who are afraid that simply pressing a key might break their computer.
Intermediate Users: people who don’t know how to fix their computer after they’ve just pressed a key that broke it.
Expert Users: people who break other people’s computers.

“That’s what’s cool about working with computers. They don’t argue, they remember everything, and they don’t drink all your beer.”
Paul Leary

“If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce would today cost $100, get a million miles per gallon, and explode once a year, killing everyone inside.”
Robert X. Cringely

“Just remember: you’re not a ‘dummy,’ no matter what those computer books claim. The real dummies are the people who–though technically expert–couldn’t design hardware and software that’s usable by normal consumers if their lives depended upon it.”
Walter Mossberg

We are in the same boat, Angel, except I’ll bet the computer you are using is faster on dial-up than mine which is running at a snail’s pace of 25.4 kpbs! It took a loooonnnnnngggggg time to load this page! My high-speed ISP is down. Thank goodness I saved dial-up as a backup. Also, before it went down it wouldn’t let me get to HaloScan to answer my comments. What a pain! They should have it fixed tomorrow… I hope!

I’ll be glad to welcome you home, but I may be late getting here.

I keep a backup, dialup, connection for those rare days when my big pipe is down, but I, too, hate using it. *heh* FOr one thing, I always have to hunt up one of my external modems, unless I use my Wonder Woman’s notebook which has a fairly permanent (cos I don’t wanna dig in the thing’s innards to amputate the thing *heh*) modem installed. Then, there’s the “speed” issue. What an oxymoron: dialup speed.

Oh, well, just think: this too shall pass.

  3. OMMAG says:

Got a laptop? Got wireless Card?
Go anywhere near a public library and you should have Bband connection.
    Dialup is for dinosaurs.

  4. middleclassguy says:

Rather have your rain than the 0 temp where I live. Sunny day though.

Nice, bright, sunny day plus sub zero windchill factor= global smarming.

  5. frasypoo says:

    Yay,we got snow !!

  6. Incognito says:

I almost always have to deal with hideous dial-up when I’m working out of town, which is a major pain, when I’m gone for several months!!

    I feel for ya!

  7. MK says:

Hang in there Angel, using dial up can have it’s good sides folks, it forces you to become efficient, make the most of every bit and byte.

  8. Layla says:

Now you have a great time down in the sunshine state of Florida and yes dial-up is so slow, but it is better than nothing. We’d be missing you a whole lot if you had no internet at all down there–hope that makes feel sunny! Hugs and have fun now!! :)

  9. Brooke says:

It was ONE DEGREE last night.

    I’m jealous!

  10. Joe Gringo says:

64 degrees here in AZ, waiting on the Giants and Patriots to come to town here to battle it out in the Super Bowl?

Regtarding dial ups, we’re now conditioned that waiting 10 seconds for a page to load is a forever…..my how the times have changed!

    Orlando? Miami?

ntermediate Users: people who don’t know how to fix their computer after they’ve just pressed a key that broke it.—This is me. You could have come to the Pacific Northwest…it is raining here too. (((hugs)))

  12. HNAV says:

You cannot leave your work to go off to Florida !

    That is NOT fair…

hoping you enjoyed a break, best wishes…

  13. Aurora says:

Enjoy the rest of despite the rain. It’s raining here in Sydney and it’s supposed to be Summer!
Enjoy your broadband…Our Aussie broadband is and always will be a bit slower than the rest of the west’s. It would cost a king’s ransom to upgrade it considering we have a population of just 21 million people in a continent about the size of the U.S. Improving broadband for people who live those kinds of distances apart is practically impossible. Oh well..there’s always the beach. ;)

  14. Daniel Ruwe says:

I hate dial-up. On the other hand, I would like to see some warm weather, so maybe it balances out.

  15. The Hermit says:

I sympathize completely. I have to use dial up at home. Usually 28.8 kps..

  16. EDGE says:

    I was in SC Saturday… cold & rainy… :O(

  17. middleclassguy says:

OK, enough with the Florida schtick!!!!!!! Snow and cold here. So post something already!

  18. Debbie says:

Glad you are having a good time, in spite of the dial-up internet connection. Hubby had a heart attack Friday morning at 1:13. We spent Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. One artery blocked 99%, one new stint installed, and we are back home. First thing he wants to do is start playing his music again. Amazing what doctors can do these days.

  19. Yankee Doodle says:

    Hey, Angel!

Bet if it were sunny, you wouldn’t even know your Dad had Internet access. ;)

  20. cube says:

Sorry about the lousy weather this weekend. We hadn’t had much rain or much cold until you arrived.

Enough internet gibresh talk: it’s making me sick! I just wanted to come on by and tell you that 1) The humus on my plate would make a better P.M. than our last 5(that’s Smolmert, Sharon, Barak, Bibi, Rabin) put together and that 2) I certainly hope you’re ready for the frozen taundra ’cause you ain’t a gonna be in the sun forever…Just a wake-up call;)
