Whether it’s an email, a printed document, or a web site, the typeface you choose says a lot about the type of person you are. To begin with, anyone who makes a conscious effort to choose a typeface instead of just going with the default is showing that they care about detail.

What Does Your Font Say About You?
Times Roman is a serif typeface that has been around since the 1930s when the British newspaper commissioned it. That alone should tip you off to the fact that this font is serious. People who choose it want their words to speak for themselves; although a few wrote to say it was “boring.”

Arial is one of the most ubiquitous typefaces used today. It has a simple, straight-forwardness that causes you to attend to the words, not the writing.

Ah yes. Creative writing. biggrin.gif

There are several styles of writing, as we know.

Narrative writing tends to relay a personal or fictional experience or tells us a story based on a real or imagined happening.

Expository writing, on the other hand, is designed to convey information or to explain things which are difficult to understand.

Then of course, there is a form many bloggers would be intimately acquainted with: hat.gif
Persuasive writing, which tries to convince the reader to adopt a particular point of view or even to take a specific action.

Want to be a better or more creative persuasive writer do ya?

Here are some tricks o’ the trade.
Free of charge. Heh.flirt.gif

-Always use evidence to support your viewpoint. Raging, cussing and carryin on won’t sell your point ultimately. blahani-uddy.gif

Unlike Leftards, intelligent conservatives..ha enjoy when you appeal to their sense of logic by presenting specific and relevant evidence in a well-organized fashion.

-Take into account opposing views.
Anticipate the concerns or questions that readers may have about your subject. (especially if it’s controversial..Not that I would know anythin about that eh? ) laughing0.gif

-Always provide a strong conclusion.
Now that youv’e presented all this groovy evidence..(you did do that didn’t ya?..See Tip# 1)…
make sure you build toward a strong ending where you summarize your view in a brilliant and memorable way.

Some people are naturally gifted and creative writers……you can just taste it and you hang on their every word…don’t you..well don’t you? (hint hint) angelgirl.gif

So, what does your font, style or writing ability say about you..Hmmmmm.

What does it say about me?
Don’t answer that.
heh.

Great job. I don’t really consider myself a writer, but someone who shares information with others. When I’m creating images, I like to experiment with different fonts.

  2. nanc says:

i like ALL of my type to look exactly the same, with the exception of BOLD or CAPITAL letters. i resist change because i had too much of it as a child so once i’m grounded in a party cooler way, i stay there.

Just when I thought I was a decent sort of writer this comes along…great post Angel, some notable pointers. My fav fonts are ariel, times roman, verdana and tahoma…finally am not good at telling both sides of the story, am too one sided..on the right side of course…

  4. Rosemary's Thoughts says:

Blogger news: Fairness Doctrine, Terrorism, Conservatism…

Discussions of the backdoor attempts to silence the masses, Flight training schools and illegal aliens…again, what are your ideals as a conservate, and the war of words between Columbia and Venezuela, and why is the media taking our enemy’s side? …..

    Wonderful post. Thank you.

I like Arial — but I’m usually lazy and don’t change from the default font of whatever tool I’m using.

When I started blogging, I set a goal to post every day for 30 days (to make it a habit). I think I missed only 3 in the first 9 months. The habits that we establish with regards to writing are just as critical as other habits that we set. So, set good ones!

    — I just wish I had your creative way of presenting things!

    Excellent tips!

And don’t forget how important it is to READ so as to get a handle on different styles.

I have to admit that I don’t fool around much with font styles these days. But I used to, when I first started using a computer. Just seeing all the possiblities for a word or a phrase gave me a sense of euphoria. ;)

Cool post and great, noteworthy points! I am no writer by anyone’s measure (nor do I claim to be), but write anyway as a release and form of expression. I am rarely moved to write unless I feel I have something unique to offer. Regurgitating what has already been presented bores me (and probably the reader, too). I like to share my views and compare them with those interested enough to comment.

Sometime in my younger days I recall being told… “Tell ‘em what you’re going to tell ‘em, then tell ‘em, then tell ‘em what you just told them”. I think you were supposed to use different words each time (HA!)… and it was probably applicable to public speaking, too… which also was a job of mine once. And “write it like you would speak it in a conversation… with humility” is a self imposed rule of my own.

Nice change change of ‘writing pace’, Angel.

I think the support for your point varies depending on who you’re trying to convince. As today’s political climate shows, if you want to convince your average voter today of something, emotion is MUCH more powerful than facts. If you can scare someone, they tend to believe your point a lot quicker than if you provide factual evidence of that same thing. Sure, that’s wrong, but if you’re aiming for the average voter, it clearly works. Maybe I’ll change the name of my blog to “The Emotional Conservative.”

  9. Gayle says:

“The Emotional Conservative.” LOL! Well, it certainly works for Obama (not the “conservative” part, of course).

I just write what I think, Angel, and let the chips fall where they may. I do use a lot of links though. I don’t have a particular style - at least I don’t think I do. It’s just me.

  10. Kevin says:

“Always use evidence to support your viewpoint.”

Not fair! How can I link people who agree with my viewpoint when my viewpoints are idiotic! Your rules are too tough, Angel.

  11. Layla says:

Great post Angel! I am a writer and I take seriously what I do. Your points are all balanced and well founded. I appreciate the reminders. We all need them from time to time! :)

  12. HannahJ says:

Great discussion! That’s one of the reasons I chose the template I did for my blog - it reflects my (snooty/academic, sometimes :( ) style of writing and complements the overall layout. Though I took a quiz over at Blogthings some time ago that said my blog should be green. Hmm…

  13. Brooke says:

Kewl. We are all writers to one extent or another.

  14. Jungle mom says:

great pointers! I am trying very much to write each day. As a mother, I require this of my children as well. If I expect it of them, I need to model it before them.

  15. benning says:

Just remember NOT to send a manuscript to a publisher in oddball fonts. They don’t like them, won’t read them, and consider the use of ‘pretty’ fonts unprofessional. Save them for your webpage and your letters. *wink*

  16. KKarLlmM says:

Well written, well said..now all we have to do is listen.
Thanks Angel for giving us all a well deserved lesson in the ART!!!! of writing..For me, i am much better with the spoken word…at least there i do not have to use only one finger at a time….
