Olympics in China? DeaD WronG

Fans worldwide are breathlessly waiting for their team, for their “favorites” to ceremonially enter the arena.

Despite our joy for the achievements of the athletes participating; those of us with a conscience know deep down, on some gut level– something is deeply wrong here.

The International Olympic Committee’s decision to award the Olympics Games to Beijing did so despite China’s horrific and appalling human rights record, or lack of.

Why praytell should a Communist one-party state warrant the right, or should I say “privilege” of hosting the Olympics?

Survey finds 48% believe U.S. political officials should not attend the opening ceremony due to China’s poor human rights record.

70% Believe IOC Was Wrong to Award Olympic Games to China

Human Rights Flagrant Violations?

Here are just a handful:
Free Speech

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is planning to lobby the Chinese Government to improve internet access after the Chinese Olympic Committee declared it will censor the internet during the Games.
IOC to challenge internet censorship in Beijing
A key platform of Beijing’s successful Olympic bid was to improve human rights and provide media freedom during the event.

Internet access is very slow in Beijing and many websites including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch are currently blocked.

Torture
Torture of prisoners and detainees is endemic in Chinese detention centers and throughout their prisons.
See China Human Rights Fact Sheet for all the gruesome details.

Lack of Judicial Independence and Due Process

We won’t even delve into Beijing’s notoriously bad air pollution.
Leave that to the ever so silent Greeny Leftys to shout about. In case they forgot….Pollution was one of the reasons China lost the 1993 bid to host the 2000 Olympics.

So, where are the Global Warming freakazoids now?

Abuse of Women:

China – At first, her husband used his fists.
Soon it got worse, much worse.
Beatings became kicks. Swearing at her was common. Silence more so. In the end, he came at her with a butcher knife as she lay on a hospital bed.

In China, a custom of spousal abuse

Women commonly are victims in their own house, and their suicide rates are startling. There are signs of change in cities, but rural life is marked by brutality.

Abduction and Trafficking of Women:

Trafficking and sale of women as brides or into prostitution is a serious problem in certain parts of China, and Chinese women have been sold into brothels in Southeast Asia.”

The list goes on and on my friends.

The farce of it all is that China simply has a twisted desire to place itself in the global spotlight, while hoping that no one will focus on the nation’s unforgivable flaws.

And we are handing her that undeserved gift.

Offering their corrupt leaders this prestige-building extravaganza. For what?

The Olympics apolitical? Hardly.

I don’t expect most countries to make concern over human rights a top priority, but I certainly expect nothing less from the United States.

We, my sweet friends, if no one else in this God forsaken world : should make a stand.

Seeing our President smiling and shaking the hand of a Communist dictator is too much for me! What message is he sending to the oppressed Chinese people? It sure as hell isn’t the message of the hope of freedom!

And this shows the inherent difference between the Reagan Conservatives and the RINO “conservatives” of today – including Bushwhacked. I’m still scratching my head wondering why we didn’t boycott these games like we did the Russian games. Bush has no balls. Sure..he did an excellent job in the beginning with the whole 9/11 incident and follow-up..but..since then..its just downhill.

This would have been a great moment to send the message. I don’t really give a shit if every freakin’ thing bought and sold in this country is made in China. I don’t really give a flying frak if China would have stopped importing and exporting if we boycotted them. I think it’s time we bring all those production jobs back over here anyway. China’s been killing our pets, poisoning our children, and shipping inferior goods to us for far too long.

Internally, China has big problems. Among other things like Tibet, there is a big population of Muslims in the North West who feel that allah wants them to rule the world. This has resulted in many buses exploding on city streets in China with no official explanation. We are getting a glimpse of those troubles now that so many outsiders are visiting.

The U.S. TV coverage of the Olympics is a big financial investment for the U.S. networks. They can’t afford to report what’s really going on since it will impact the bottom line. So, they pretend everything is hunky dory and show us all the beautiful scenery and art and culture. The uglier results of communism and oppression are hidden from site or glanced over.

  33. Perri Nelson says:

I don’t generally watch the Olympics anymore. The notion that they ought to be apolitical is still a good one, even if they really aren’t anymore.

They ought to be about international cooperation and athletic competition, but that spirit was lost long ago. Now it’s all about one thing — money.

  34. ~Straight Shooter~ says:

Looks like I will be the Lone Dissenter. It is not our American Athletes’ fault the IOC chose Beijing. I agree with not supporting China for all it’s hienous atrocities. However, I refuse to turn my back on all those kids’ dreams and years of dedication to get there. It reminds me of the war protesters I see at our airport. They are calling out names and slogans TO THE PEOPLE WHO ARE FIGHTING FOR THEIR RIGHT TO ACT LIKE ASSHOLES. Boycotting China is absolutely the right thing to do. But boycotting our Athletes by not watching, cheering, crying and smiling with them? They’ve made huge sacrifices to be there. To be, in this instance, the THE BEST AMERICAN EXAMPLES we have to offer the Chinese people.
In searching around for some Olympic facts I somehow came in contact with a couple different Chinese people by email. They both asked me why “America hate China”? I tried to explain why many of us felt the need to make a loud and clear statement to their gov’t. Neither understood why we would do such a thing. It made no sense to these proud people. They both said in their own way, “Chinese people good people…like Americans”.
I came away with this. Neither understood b/c neither knew any different. They are not allowed freedoms of any kind. They do not know their life is so different than ours. They do not know they could or should be able to live better lives. Ones without fear or intimidation. They do not KNOW b/c they have not seen otherwise. Having all these thousands of foreignors may be just the thing they need to spark a change. What if the Chinese Government’s plan to be in the limelight in a false, twisted manner backfires? What if the Chinese people see examples of what should be, could be? What would the gov’t do with 1,300,000,000 rising up?
My own personal mantra is Show by example. And I believe there is a whole lot of that going on in between sporting events. I’m watching and cheering our American athletes on. And the Chinese athletes as well.

Although they don’t deserve the Olympics, in a funny way I’m glad it was given to them this year as it has shone the glaring spotlight upon their horrific abuses like nothing else could have. It’s the Olympics, the IOC…I don’t expect much from them…

After the Munich massacre they went on with the Olympics as if nothing had happened. After a brief lull and a few token words the games went on. The flags of some nations flew at half mast but the Arabs DEMANDED that theirs flow high and the Olympic committee agreed – raising the Arab flags.

There has NEVER been a proper commemoration of the victims of this massacre, the families of the victims have asked the IOC to establish a permanent memorial to the athletes, but the IOC has declined, saying that to introduce a specific reference to the victims could “alienate other members of the Olympic community,”

YES IT WOULD! It would alienate the cowardly nations who financially and morally support such attrocities. G*d forbid!!!

The Olympics is supposed to be a gathering of nations, who put aside their differences for a moment to compete in peaceful sports events. It is supposed to be a positive symbol of everything that is good about this world…Instead, it has become a festival of appeasement. It has become a symbol for everything wrong about this world.

As for China, they have come a long way in the past decade and should be commended for this, alas, we need to grasp and reinforce anything positive, no matter how small (that said: we should also keep highlighting and combatting the negative). Still, the IOC has tremendous leverage, it would have been nice to see them use this leverage to bring some good to this world. They could have easily DEMANDED that China allow trully free media access & a censor free Internet for AT LEAST the entire time of the Olympics. You can bet they would have obliged for fear of losing the right to host!

Instead we get this same-old-same-old “hear no evil, see no evil, smell no evil”…

I think the only means of getting change QUICK (i.e. other than letting it progress naturally, which is happening, albeit slowly) is by using leverage that works.

We know 2 things work against the Chinese:
1.) Economics – the USA is China’s largest trading partner. You would think that would give it ALOT of leverage. BUt the reality is different. The USA can’t really use the economic card as easily as it does with other nations because, like many other nations it has made itself ABSOLUTELY RELIANT ON CHINA for many manufactured goods. If the USA were to threaten China with lower trade (through taxes, levies, embargoes or domestic competition) then China would be correct to laugh as to do this the USA would need to rebuild an entire manufacturing infrastructure. Closing down trade with China would likely hurt Americans more than the Chinese (i.e. textiles, certain electronics components are now nearly completely outsourced, you stop trade and you stop your nations businesses and people from being able to aquire essential goods!)

Are you sure China executes more of its people than any other country in the world? Is that per-capita (because numbers alone mean nothing, they are after all, the most populated nation on the planet)… They are definitely not perfect but I have some faith in China. Things are changing there, slowly but surely. Organic change tends to be smoother and more permanent than enticed or forced change.

    Reply:
THE OLYMPIC CHARTER IS A USELESS DOCUMENT. The IOC does not stand for any values! Like I said, after the Munich massacre, they allowed nations to fly their flags high up (rather than at half fast). Olympic officials themselves raised the flags of Arab nations who supported the Munich massacre. The Arabs should have been forced to either stand with the world, according to the so-called “Olympic values” or leave, thereby clearly declaring where they stand.

Rather than standing for all that is good about humanity, the IOC stands for one of the world’s greatest ills : APPEASEMENT.
