Benning investigates beating of Jewish soldier

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — In a letter home, a Jewish soldier in basic training at Fort Benning complained of religious discrimination and wrote that a friend overheard platoon members saying they wanted to beat him up.

Days later, Pvt. Michael Handman was beaten so badly he had to be treated at a hospital, and his father believes the attack stemmed from an investigation of Handman’s claims that instructors had harassed him and used anti-Semitic slurs.

“I have just never been so discriminated against/humiliated about my religion,” Handman wrote to his parents. “I just feel like I’m always looking over my shoulder. Like my battle buddy heard some of the guys in my platoon talking about how they wanted to beat the (expletive) out of me tonight while I’m sleeping.”

Jewish Army Trainee in Ga. Says He Was Beaten

Handman, 20, of Atlanta wrote to his parents that he was heading to take a shower on Sept. 24, four days after investigators interviewed him about the harassment, when another soldier called him into the laundry room, saying some of Handman’s clothes were in a pile on the floor. Handman said he was sorting through the pile on his knees when a fist knocked him on his back.

“He kept hitting the side of my face, back of my head and temples for about 10-15 more seconds that I can remember,” Handman wrote. “After that I was knocked out. Next thing I remember is tasting blood and 2 pvts. (privates) standing over me calling my name.”

He was treated for a concussion and bruising to the left side of his face at the Army hospital on post and moved to a different platoon after he returned to training the next day, said Fort Benning spokeswoman Monica Manganaro.

Manganaro said two drill sergeants are being reprimanded for religious discrimination toward Handman after he started basic training Aug. 29.

She said one drill sergeant had called Handman “Juden” — the German word for Jews. Another demanded he remove his yarmulke, which Handman wore with his uniform, while eating in a dining hall.

Investigators have interviewed a fellow trainee suspected of attacking Handman, but no charges have been filed. Mangaro said investigators believe the attack “was not due to religious prejudice” but would not explain why.

Charming way to start a career in the Army eh.
Any media coverage on this?

Don’t bother answering that.

In order for The army to function, the one prequisite is unity.
Soliders need to know in their gut that they share the same goals and aims.

So because a Jew presents as a tad “different”, this created so much friction that his buddies tried to beat the living daylights out of him?

Yes, The Army is a fighting machine, and at times the fighting takes place amongst its soldiers instead of against the enemy.

But considering the “enemy” we face today in the rabid, psychotic, crazed IzlamoNazis, you would think the targets of hate would not be Jewish soldiers who line up to defend their country, perhaps even with their very lives.

“the Army found that two (non-commissioned officers)… “inadvertently” violated the Army Regulation … by using inappropriate terms when referencing the Jewish faith.”

Did you ever hear such a load of debris?

Tell me praytell, Just how does one go about “inadvertently” using anti Semitic terms?

Too bad the soldier wasn’t Muslim or better yet……..Wiccan .Those investigators would have been all over them like a virus and they would have been discharged pronto zoomo.

For crying outloud. This is a volunteer army we are talking about.

Any young man who chooses to risk his very life for the defense of his country deserves to be shown consideration and treated with respect for his religious beliefs.
His religion aint the one calling Christians and infidels apes and pigs ya know.

That would be um……….Them:

Pvt. Michael Handman should have an expectation of camaraderie and above all, -personal safety from his fellow army bretheren.

Shame on them.

Press charges. Now.

This is terrible! I’m praying this story turns out to be false. We need to hear more about this story. If it’s true, America is in deeper doo-doo than I thought we were.

I was in the Army from 1967 to 1970. Same type of crap happened back then too, not very often, but it happened. It might be religion, it might be laziness, it might be wetting the bed, but it happened. Remember, our troops are people and not all people are perfect.

So i have to defend myself BEFORE i defend my country…
Seems like something is rotten in Georgia.
I guess you really got to watch out when “the lights go out in Georgia”

The offenders need to be punished or kicked out of service for this barbaric act. As long as people are attacked for their faith. No believer of any faith is safe. I would like to know more on the background of the ones that did the assault.

This is getting ridiculous. This is America and I for one am fed up with this kind of stuff going on toward Jews and Christians. Have not heard of a christian in the army being beat up for that reason..but it is happening in schools and some Universities are making fun of those with faith.

Our founding fathers would turn over in their grave.

Well said Angel, if he had been a Muslim, they’d be screaming from the rooftops and the President would be issuing apologies while someone’s ass was being kicked as hard as possible until the kicker got tired and someone else had to take over.

It never ceases to amaze me, this dislike and hatred of Jews, they have don’t nothing but contribute to the world, they have born the brunt of Islamic terrorism, one of their own is our lord and savior, yet here are some of us hatin’ on them. Makes no sense to me.

  6. Kristina says:

Yes, not only do charges need to be brought, these guys need to be kicked out of the Army (the ones that did the beating). Since I don’t know what happened with the platoon leaders, I think they need to be investigated and at the least have a change of jobs. (Unfortunately, using foul language about recruits is one of the things platoon leaders do. If it was done equally, I wouldn’t really have a problem with it. But, you can guarantee that this would not be allowed were it race related or, as you said, against one of the “protected” religions.) The guys who beat him up need to be thrown in the brig.

Where is all the outcry about hate crimes????

  7. Debbie says:

This is hard to believe Angel, that a soldier in the U.S. military who is Jewish would be beaten for his religion. I truly hope this is wrong. But if it is true, these men need to be prosecuted.

  8. Terry_JIm says:

I trust that justice will be done.

When I was in basic training, I met men from all over the country, and a few from different countries. We didn’t have any bigots that I knew of, and anyway we were way too busy to be attacking each other.

There is a void of leadership in that company, I trust that it will be corrected.

  9. Always On Watch says:

If a Moslem soldier had been threatening in such a way at Fort Benning, the story would be all over the news — with our without confirmation of the story.

  10. LomaAlta says:

Always, you are correct. Accusations of Muslum soldiers being mistreated would not need an investigation, it would be true at once. And all hell would have to be paid. The same for almost any other minority.

Does this case lend support for screening recruits for radical Muslim sympathy?

  11. OMMAG says:

Morons and thugs are to be found in all walks of life … the military attracts it’s share.
So do police forces, sports teams, factories and accountants firms.

The thing about the military is that these jerkoffs are going to find themselves in a shithole whether or not an official investigation is launched.

Remember there is justice and then there is military justice.

    Hi Angel,

Sad story about the soldier. Obama’s troops are down here in Palm Beach County trying to sell the lie to the Jewish people that he is a reliable supporter of Israel. They seem to be buying it. I just don’t understand…………..steve

I am under 40, never served in the army and live above the Mason Dixon line. I have experienced hatred as a Jew in the USA and I am well aware of the rasicm and hatred that goes in the “bible belt” and else where in our great country. It was happening in the USA during WWII while we fought the Nazis an unfotunately it is still happening. Yes the army is trained killing machines, but they also allow hatred to go on be it against homosexuals, women, Jewish people, and African-Americans. It still goes on. I love my country but I also love my faith and I am aware that people in my own country, many people still harbor the thoughtless hatred for me as well as others. It may be very hypocritical that the army who lays its life on the line to fight for freedom in other countries can be the same people who commit such thoughtless acts against its own contry or worse, its own fellow brothers in arms. To thin that this Jewish marine would have layed is life on the line for anyone of those bastards who beat him is disgusting. I am sorry to say that today, I am not so proud of out great nation. Hopefuly tommorow will be a better day.

They Tried, But They Couldn’t Hide It, They Tried……

Just who is they and what did they try to hide? Very good questions. ‘They’ is the Democrats, especially the Obama team, and the ‘what’ is the video that proves this financial fiasco can be laid at their front doorstep. [Here's the video]…
