U.S. Airways Jet Crashes into the Hudson
THE pilot of the plane that crashed into icy waters off New York has been hailed as a hero after all on board cheated death.
Plane crashes into New York’s Hudson River, no injuries
The US Airways pilot, Chesley Sullenberger, was praised by survivors and officials for coolly landing the jet belly-first on to the Hudson River, allowing all 155 passengers and crew to make a successful evacuation from the stricken craft. On a freezing winter’s day, water temperatures were estimated at -6C outside and 4C in the water, making it a race against time to get everyone off the plane before they could suffer from hypothermia.
I was on call tonight my friends for this, but thank the Good Lord…all passengers are now safe and sound. The entire flight lasted less than six minutes.
Every day , more than 3 million people will catch a plane. And despite flying being the safest form of travel, so many are petrified of flying: crashing and dying.
The truth is that over 90% of plane crashes have survivors.
Yet here in NYC, when there are planes involved, some fear the worst.
For many, flight crashes in NY can’t help but rekindle 9/11 terror.
Waves of relief.
Thank you US Airways pilot, Chesley Sullenberger.
Thank you again FDNY, NYPD Water rescue, the Coast Guard and all my fellow responders and emergency personnel.
Forever prepared, equipped and trained for any situation.
How extraordinary are they.

Another day. Another miracle.
God bless every one of you.
There is an art . . . to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

“Miracle on the Hudson” indeed.

Seeing such a band of heros: The pilot, the calm passengers, the civilian boaters and NYC rescue come together to make such a fantastic rescue…
Damn, it’s a fine day to be an American!

i missed this entire event by ignoring the news yesterday – it wasn’t until about 5:30 p.m. when i turned the tv on that i caught it – simply amazing – what a pilot!
angel – did you get to attend to any of the passengers?
January 16th, 2009 at 10:36 am
As pilots say, “Any landing you walk away from, is a good landing!”
January 16th, 2009 at 11:23 am
FYI – EVERYBODY:
you may write a note to the pilot here.
bloomberg’s giving him a key to the city – he deserves it.

It is truly a miracle.I will never complain about turbulence ever again!
January 16th, 2009 at 11:54 am
Excellent work by all NYer’s…..I think we all needed some good news and that pilot sure came through.
US Airways is HQ’d here in AZ (Tempe) I say we give him the keys to PHoenix/Tempe as well!

Great post. It’s simply amazing the plane didn’t break apart, didn’t catch fire, and didn’t sink before everyone could get out. I’m sure Michael Newdow is rather upset and will seek to ban public records of the incident, since the word “miracle” might appear once or twice in various official reports.

Indeed, the outcome of this particular plane crash was a miracle!
A little while ago, I read the following on the AOL Welcome page:
Federal investigators said both engines are missing from the US Airways jetliner that ditched into the Hudson River…
How strange is that!

We were all watching TV when news broke … good summary Angel

Great summary of what happened. God bless that Captain that did such a brilliant job saving all those lives and the quick rescue teams. Awesome! Thank God!
January 16th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
The manner in which the Captain landed and had the people exit the plane is a miracle to say the least. He saved all those lives and should receive an honor for that.
Thanks for coming by my blog. I am hard pressed for time so much with work I barely get time to comment at others blogs and to let them know I appreciate them visiting and commenting.

Thankfully every one is alive. Well done the pilot an crew on that flight.
January 16th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
I was quite surprised that we haven’t heard the pilot, Chesley Sullenberger, proclaim “God is my co-pilot” or something similar. Maybe he did and I just haven’t seen it yet. Absolutely a miricle. Not only was no one killed, hardly any one was even seriously injured.

This truly was a miracle, Angel. Another “miracle” happened too: The fact that the MSM actually carried a “good news” story for more than one day is a miracle of the first order!

Hi Angel… I’m back – well ok, not really, going away for a week but will be back after that… Was really sick for a while but now I’m good enough to rant…
I’m not sure I would label this the ‘M’ word but there was obviously alot of good luck on the side of these passengers. The reason this Pilot pulled this off is because he was an extremely experienced COMBAT PILOT! The guy pilotted F4 Phantoms (not the easiest plan to fly I’m told) and even his colleagues considered him a great pilot. Combat pilots are classic Type-As, they are fiercly competitive – so for them to say he was a great pilot is HUGE; i.e. every pilot I’ve ever met would laud over how good a pilot THEY (themselves) were…
I find the captain’s clear headedness even more remarkable than his pilotting skills though. Think about it – where is the ABSOLUTE WORST PLACE IN THE UNITED STATES TO HAVE TO DO A CRASH LANDING?! MANHATTAN! It’s smoggy, there are buildings everywhere, moderate air activity, and not an ‘empty’ spot in site! It’s a dense JUNGLE! Even the Hudson river isn’t a ‘wide open’ fairway – it’s full of activity. I can’t imagine a worse place for this to occur!
Of all the cursed Murphy events, this one cliches it. I REALLY HOPE THEY RELEASE THE BLACK BOX RECORDINGS OF THIS – I am absolutely dying to know how he reacted initially (I know I’d go into a fuming 10+ minute multi-lingual expletive farcfest).
