Sing on Cpl. Joshua Belile

For lyrics and the video see:Hadji Girl

“Cpl. Joshua Belile thought up the words to “Hadji Girl” in September while drinking coffee with buddies in Iraq.

It was just a joke, Belile says, a play on lines from a movie. His fellow Marines seemed to enjoy the song, so they got Belile up on a stage with his guitar.

Someone taped his performance, and now Belile stands in the center of a growing controversy, one that threatens to drag the New River Air Station Marine and his blackly humorous song into the debate about the alleged incident at Haditha and the war in Iraq…
Humor attempt falls flat continues..

Belile, a 23-year-old who lives in Jacksonville and serves with Marine Light/Attack Helicopter Squadron 167, said the song was meant only as a joke, based on lines from “Team America: World Police” and that he apologizes to people who may have been offended by the lyrics.

“It’s a song that I made up and it was nothing more than something supposed to be funny, based off a catchy line of a movie,” Belile said. “I apologize for any feelings that may have been hurt in the Mus-lim community. This song was written in good humor and not aimed at any party, foreign or domestic.”

Good humor or not, the Marine Corps is now investigating..

“I think it was a joke that is trying to be taken seriously,” he said. “I think it’s a joke, and anybody who tries to take it seriously knows it’s a joke. People can’t just laugh at it and let it go.”

Belile returned from Iraq in March and is a member of a band called Sweater Kittenz, which is scheduled to perform Saturday at the Riverwalk Festival in downtown Jacksonville.”

JOKE. joke. joke.
Did anybody miss the part where he said JOKE?
People under stress, whether right or wrong, resort to “black humor” as a coping mechanism and tension release.

For those who need the newsflash.
Black or morbid humour, is a subgenre of comedy where topics and events normally treated seriously such as death, mass murder, sickness, madness, terror, ,or even WAR are mocked and treated in a humorous, light and satirical manner.

black humor

“in literature, drama, and film, grotesque or morbid humor used to express the absurdity, insensitivity, paradox, and cruelty of the modern world. Ordinary characters or situations are usually exaggerated far beyond the limits of normal satire or irony. Black humor uses devices often associated with tragedy and is sometimes equated with tragic farce. For example, Stanley Kubrick’s film Dr. Strangelove; or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1963) is a terrifying comic treatment of the circumstances surrounding the dropping of an atom bomb, while Jules Feiffer’s comedy Little Murders (1965) is a delineation of the horrors of modern urban life, focusing particularly on random assassinations. The novels of such writers as Kurt Vonnegut, Thomas Pynchon, John Barth, Joseph Heller, and Philip Roth contain elements of black humor.”

Oftentimes this form of humor rises out of a bitter, often harsh and dangerous life situation or environment. It can consist of absurd attacks on specific people, it can be “in-your-face” bold, and even stereotypical.
During war this brand of humor is oftentimes a natural eruption and response to horrific and frightening life circumstances.
Have some forgotten that?

You want to open up dialogue about black humor..G’head.
Let us start by forcing the hand of all the pornographers who make a living out of debasing and humiliating women.
Let us call for retractions from every anti-Christian and anti-Jewish sentiment ever expressed in jest.

In the mean time…….Joshua meant no harm.

His fellow Marines seemed to “enjoy the song” eh?
Perhaps they needed to laugh to keep from crying.
Sing on Josh.

Earlier today I posted, but they didn’t know who he was. I thought it was a fake…

After reading the lyrics and seeing the video I fail to find what’s offensive. I don’t hear them crying over Nick Berg’s beheading with pig noises in the background. Certainly the Marine Corps has better things to do than to get upset about a MARINE exercising his freedom of speech.

I don’t care what anyone says, that song is hilarious!
It’s the story of a gullible solgier who’s lured into an ambush by a beautiful “hadji girl”, doesn’t can’t understand a word shes saying, even when she says jihad. A lot like our MSM really.

For anyone who would like to criticize combat veterans (and I mean the no-kidding-been-engaged-directly-with-the-enemy-combat) withought ever having been in the same/similar situation: Have a nice cup of Shut the &*#@ Up!

Black humor, while negative in nature, is often the only thing that keeps folks in high stress environments from losing what’s left of their sanity.

Was the video innapropriate? Probably. Was it necessary to relieve a little of the ever present overbearing pressure of sustained combat environment? You bet yer tushie it is!

I was in Somalia in Oct ’93 for only 5 days. I still have nightmares sometimes. These soldiers and marines have been there for MONTHS! What’s the chance they might be a little more stressed than I was?

How about giving our guys the benefit of the doubt for once?

    Thanks for the link…

Cpl. Joshua Belile is rather talented…
Got a good voice, and is truly creative.

It simply reminds me, of the brave Men and Women in the US ARMED FORCES, and the amazing Free Society that produces such fascinating People.

So light hearted, sincerely unique, very funny, yet brave in the midst of a challenging environment.

    Entirely ‘human’ in nature…

Falling in Love in a War Zone, with someone trying to kill you. And in the end, an honest desire for self preservation. Harmless.

Meanwhile, Madonna is making a fool of herself on stage, tied to a Cross…

Whatever a soldier want to parody is fine by me. Of course, CAIR is outraged.

We need to make sure we start charging and prosecuting reporters and any other Media types for every infraction of every law. Especially Hate Crime Laws (even thought they are such a waste of ink and paper!). Whenever reporters speak or print something snarky about anyone it’s time to file suit for Hate Crimes.

Let’s sue the ba$tard$ until they figure it out: we aren’t offended by this, we’re offended by Leftist lies! We’re offended by anti-American reporting! We’re offended by politicians who would sell our Liberty down the river to hold their meager power!

We don’t mind a silly song. Got it?

    Sue the MSM!

I am shocked that so many people are taking this so seriously. He seems like a nice kid who was looking for a laugh from his collegues in the desert. Let them sing about anything they want to as long as they are protecting my freedoms. Whatever! People get such in a tizzy…..geez

Ever heard of the Girl from Hadji?…

Thank you for a very nice song. It is refreshing to hear someone that isn’t walking on eggshells. Our troops turn over the guy that was just shooting at them minutes or seconds before , to a prison. when the terrorists capture our Marines or Soilders , they are tortured and killed. Does anyone really care about their fealings? If someone does care , they should move to Iraq or better yet Iran! THANK YOU FOR A NICE PIECE OF MUSIC.

  14. Mali says:

    Hello to you all!
I just wanted to thank y’all for the support. Cpl Josh Belile is my Husband and we really enjoyed reading your commentary (he’s glad you all like the song)
I just wanted to say you are dead on about the Gallows (or black) humor thing. As a Retired (medically) Marine myself, i can’t even begin to explain the stuff we get into to keep ourselves occupied. No, i have never been in no-kidding-been-engaged-directly-with-the-enemy-combat on the streets of Fallujah, but i spent 7 months dodging rockets and mortars daily while trying to keep my Helicopters in good repair, and we get pretty weird out there. i’m so glad you all seem to have actually listened to the lyrics and not some crazy manifestation of what you thought it MAY have said. We make him play it whenever we have get togethers. He is actually MUCH more talented than that recording made him sound. ANYWAYS, the point of this was to say…Thank you. So there it is.
