Do not make promises that you can not keep, my philosophy has always been to do not plan to far into the future you never know what emergencies might arise. If you tell someone that you are going to do something than do it. Even if that puts yourself out of doing what you had planed to do for yourself.

I deal with a large number of broken promises every week at work, people who are apparently just too busy to remember that they made a commitment to do something by a certain date. And these folks are successful scientists too… makes you wonder just how successful, in the end. I remember conscientious folks, but recall the inconsiderate ones even more.
