Greatest gift I ever received? When I was ten my grandpa gave me a tacklebox. He died soon after so I consider it the best gift ever.
I was his favorite grandson because I coud fish all day long and never complain. I still miss that America loving, Commie hating, old man.
They just don’t make men like him anymore. If I am even a little bit like him and my father then I will be a decent man.

Setting aside the spiritual and relational gifts ,
( certainly the greatest gifts)
the first that comes to mind is…
I recall getting an Official Cub Scout pocket knife for my birthday when I was …hmmm 8 or 9… 9 I think.
I could hardly open it because the hinges were so stiff, It was a thumbnail- buster, but I loved to carry it. It was a step into manhood to be trusted to carry an Official Cub Scout pocket knife , you see. A badge that showed the faith of father in son, to exercise wisdom in handling this manly tool.
I had a pair of grey corduroy pants that had a clip above the right front pocket … don’t know why, but it was perfect to hold my prized knife. Those were the innocent days, The Wonder Years, in the late 60’s when a boy with a knife in school wasn’t cause for alarm… as long as he wasn’t playing “Mumblty Peg ” with it, and kept it in his pocket during class.
The pocket knife got easier to open with use, stiffer with the occasional run through the washing machine, and duller than a spork from whittling-
the only thing I recall using it for. I last saw it in a drawer full of ‘Stuff’…rusted and as difficult to open as the day my newly-9-year-old fingers unwrapped it and broke a thumbnail.
Maybe it’s in that box of memrobilia in the garage
that Mom gave me last year.
I can still see the new shiny blue plastic, the silver-y steel ends and Cub Scout logo, the brassy pieces near the hinges that locked the blades open, and the small rivited half hoop of steel that kept it securely mine.
I think I prefer the memory of it to seeing it rusted
in the junk box, so I won’t look for it in the garage.
Until my thumbnails grow out a bit.
